  • Mid Terrace Extension and Remodel in Ballyconnel

Mid-terrace extension and remodel in Ballyconnell, Co. Cavan. Our clients and their young family adopted the ‘Don’t move, improve’ approach with their mid-terrace dwelling, originally built in the 1950’s. The back of the house is facing the Woodford Canal, glimpses of passing cruisers can be caught from the new split-level kitchen/dining area, also the new attic bedroom. The distinct black brickwork extension is in response to the house context viewed from the opposite bank of the canal also to the client’s request for something a ‘little less ordinary’. • House amidst the Drumlins

This build was a contemporary farmhouse design near Cavan Town, of a simple but elegantly formed volume with associated utility and storage areas arranged as outbuildings, in a nod to traditional farm settlements of old. Material use of dry stonework, charred timber and natural slate add refinement to the elevations, whilst the living areas harness vistas of the drumlin countryside as far as hills of East Cavan. • Cabu Killykeen Cavan

Cabu by The Lakes is a holiday retreat within the woods of Killykeen Forest Park, on the shores of Lough Oughter, Co. Cavan. The project entailed the upgrade and adaptive reuse of existing forest chalet complex and amenity buildings originally developed by Coillte Teoranta in the 1980’s and 1990’s. The complex had not been in use since 1999 and our clients have carried out an extensive upgrade to the complex, in their own distinctive Cabu style. The holiday complex reopened in August 2020 to public acclaim and is one of the good news stories of 2020 within this region. • House with an Orchard

Our clients, a young couple, found this gem of a property near Mohill, Co. Leitrim and we were delighted to be invited to help them realise it’s great potential. The old farmhouse and granary outbuilding faced onto an overgrown mature garden with an orchard, ringfort and had a derelict outbuilding to the side of the house. Our design solution was to link the house and granary via a contemporary style extension with South facing aspects into the beautiful garden. Stone from the derelict outbuilding was re-used to the rear extension. Glimpses of Seltan Lough can be caught from the roof terrace over the extension. This self-build was a monumental effort by the clients who did much of the work themselves and can surely be proud of their efforts. • Station House

Originally opened in 1856 this railway station, designed in the Italianate style by English Architect George Wilkinson, had fallen into a state of neglect. In 2016 we were delighted to be invited by the new owner to design the remodeling and extension of the premises, converting it into a family home. We were also engaged to instigate a program of conservation, repair, and careful restoration. In keeping with principles of conservation, the extension effected minimal intervention into the original building, as is evident in the narrowest of connections between old and new via the glazed bridge at 1st floor level. The former yard to the rear of the station house becoming the kitchen/dining area, leading through to the new glazed South facing living room, all under a sweeping flat roof, floating only marginally above the original yard walls. The execution of the works was a tour de force by the client who has now safeguarded the buildings existence and Architectural significance for generations to come.
